I got a discussion last week with a friend about food allergy and food intolerance, and in particular what should we do if we are lactose intolerant. Food allergy is an immune response and food intolerance is a bit more difficult to define, it is more a “chemical” reaction.
Food allergy and food intolerance share common reactions such as diarrhoea, tummy upsets, breathing difficulties. It is very difficult to differentiate without testing. Your doctor can test some of the allergies via the body’s response to an allergen via a blood test or skin prick test.
What we need to know if even lactose intolerant people can still have a bit of cheese. Studies show that most adults can tolerate about 240ml of milk per day, which contains 8-10 grams of lactose.
As a Health Coach, I don’t diagnose lactose intolerances but I can help you designing your meal plans that can fit to your requirements.
